American Motors Ads
American Motors story told thru their wonderful creative marketing department! American Motors didn't have the bankroll of other auto manufacturers. So they had to come up with some great shit to get customers attention. Really simple. If you ever get a chance to look at some of the wonderful 8mm and 16mm filmstrips that have been converted to VHS and CD format, you will see what I mean. But getting the message across as to why YOU should buy a American Motors vehicle was not always easy. And it was downright competitive and dog eat dog in many markets, and with different models AMC would try to gain market share. So some of these American took a different approach, and used humor. People remember humor. How many of you remember the best Super Bowl Ads from last year? Yes, AMC was that far ahead of it's time with advertising.
I have many people ask me why the hell do I have files on my website like dealerships. I strongly believe then, back when my dad worked for AMC for 18 years as those dealerships, and NOW, that each dealership has a story to tell. I believe while everyone is busy restoring or collecting their American motors vehicles, they forget American Motors LEGACY, and where THAT car came from. The dealership. But to sell cars American Motors had to get your ass into the dealership. And by this, they used their small budget and advertising department to crank out some awesome ads that would get your attention. And other potential buyers who would then wander into a dealership to see the 'NOW CARS' from AMC.
As with many files on my website, I am extremely proud to try to attempt to tell this side of the story of American Motors history. And it is FREE. I hope you learn something. As long as I have been in this hobby I learn something daily.
I hope also that those people just now coming into the hobby, and those that will 'discover' American Motors in the future realize just what we lost when American Motors was gone suddenly in 1987. And later Plymouth. And Oldsmobile. Proud marques we grew up with are now just a part of American automotive history.
So on that note, I will try to tell AMC's story thru their great ads.
