n Staples near the big church with a spire a McDonalds popped up when I was a kid. Fancy new place, it might have been there before, just we didn't know it. At the time we were living in Lloyd Remple's rental house 642 Naples for $300 a month, as our house 2009 Antelope destroyed by hurricane Celia 1970. And we got free long trailer, 10,000+ people did, to use for year 1971 from state & senator John Tower. The trailer was shoved on property at 2009 Antelope/723 Doss, on side of grandma Maria De Alcala's house though, long trailer, brand new, free use for year!Had vents in floor with heat and air condition, wow! But poppa opted to not buy it at huge discount (I wonder how many other 1000s opted to not buythem?) and Feds took it away. Car friend of poppa came to rescue and how we got rental 642 Naples, what a beautiful neighborhood back then.
Someone asked me if we were so poor, how could we eat at McDonalds every Friday. Poppa's take home from the American Motors dealership downtown was $156.00. McDonalds was a little luxury for my family.
So routine was same, poppa cash check, come home, give momma the money except he sometimes keep some for gas, tools, stuff like that, off we went in our Rambler station wagon to the fancy new McDonalds on Staples at Lansdown. The bathrooms were really clean like Bucee's is now. Ok, no one has as clean as bathrooms as Bucee's.
Since Catholic, momma made us eat fish on Fridays, so 4 Filet O fish, 4 fries, 4 Cokes, and most time we sit in car and eat. Cheap meal, then off the Woolco back up Staples until they closed, poppa stay in car, Tommy & me in toys, momma getting basics, I believe they closed at 9pm.
Which brings me back to McDonalds. Check out the prices in 1972. Some good, cheap, stuff, and the Coca Cola was real, not the crap corn syrup served today. So just wanted to toss it out there what prices were when we "splurged" at the fancy new McDonalds in Corpus Christi on Staples in 1972.
Photos: Photo #1. Check out the menu, sure they have some dollar items in Year 2023 but they suck. The Filet O Fish back then came with splotch of tartar sauce, American cheese, and lettuce too. And was bigger than my hand I was 12-13 then.
Photo #2. The McDonalds building is still there in Corpus Christi, not sure what all it is now, ain't a fancy McDonalds so don't care.
Photo #3. The church of the Big Spire is still there but Big Spire is long gone, not sure when it was removed or another hurricane sent it
down road to Floyd's or Woolco.
