Ever seen one? They been around since 1930s. But in 1960s, Corpus Christi had a tasty treat when one come swingin thru the Sparkling City By The Sea. And stopped about 100 yards from our old crappy house 2009 Antelope (corner of Doss) at the cool old Beil's Grocery Store on Leopard, directly across from Gulf Radiator, and between Kelly's Tires on left, and Bill Ferrell Furniture on right.
The weinermobile was a new version, and had nice midget fellow chef with it, but he was not driver. Don't think he could have reached pedals anyways. I was about 8 or 9, seems whole old hood showed up, even momma walked over to see this cool car. Ok, momma was there for free Oscar Meyer hot dogs, of which they were cooking them, and given them away by dozens. Off to side you had fixings, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, onions, even sauerkraut, bleaaaa.
I don't remember how much the packs of wieners were but can tell you cheap, and momma bought two bags, as we loved hot dogs at our house, nice break from beans, rice, and vermicelli of which 1/2 century later I still can't eat. Not supposed to eat hot dogs either but doc said can eat 2-3 a month. Lot of kids at this event, black, white, brown, everyone getting along and having fun, I believe this was 1968 or 1969.
The Oscar Meyer Weinermobile has changed a lot thru years. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen as a kid, must have been 15 feet long! They would not let people inside it, and it was fiberglass. A uneducated didn't finish high school at W B Ray guess now was it probably had OTHER locations to go to in Corpus Christi to promote wieners. Could not see them driving that thing all the way from weinermobileville and just going to our little Beil's Grocery Store on Leopard though, so maybe some of ya'll also got to check it out. But Oscar Meyer Weinermobile showing up that beautiful day on Leopard increased our property values 3% at least. I ate 5 hot dogs. Brother Tommy 7. Don't know how many momma ate, but poppa didn't get to go was at work during day.
Never saw it again in Corpus Christi either. Saw it 2019 in Houston, that does not count, now I hear several of them roaming around. On the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile website, you can actually request a visit. And there is a link to see where the weinermobile might be showing up next! In October 2021 there are several stops for it in Houston, yea! But none in my hometown Corpus Christi, boo!
PHOTOS: Photo #1. The Oscar Meyer Weinermobile that showed up at Beil's Grocery Store on Leopard Street with little short chef dude. I don't think he was Oscar, but was friendly, posing with people for photos. A crew in front of store cooked the wieners for hot dogs.
Photo #2. My Beil's on Leopard at Doss. Can't believe a photo of this old place exists. I learned a number of spanish cuss words here like chingas ha ha. Learn it her, go home say it get ass whipped by momma with Hot Wheels track or belt! This was a really nice little store, had a meat market towards back.
Photo #3. A newer version, almost futuristic Weinermobile shown here, I never knew there were so many versions. There is even a MG Min Cooper version now. I wonder if and when these show up are there specials on packs of wieners now like in 1960s?
My own Oscar Meyer weinermobile sits quietly on shelf with dozens of my original Hot Wheels, Johnny Lightning & Matchbox little cars from 1960s, the curio cabinet has 200-300 little AMC cars, models, promotion things from Dealers including the dealer my dad worked at All American Motors on Water & Power in 1960s.
