USS CORPUS CHRISTI SUBMARINE

I had just moved to Houston and the Los Angeles Class nuclear attack submarine USS Corpus Christi made a call to my hometown. Huge crowd turnout though that was year it was mighty cold winter & many pipes burst, palm trees died and was steam coming off the bay due to warmer water, which killed mess of birds, fish, whatever.

1983. At later date the Catholic church griped a little about a nuclear attack sub named Corpus Christi (Body of Christ). I am Catholic all my life didn't see issue here. Anyone familiar with Bible would know Matthew 10:34 when He returns, will be swinging a sword, and pissed off! So to me at least, not big deal, and name changed to USS "Cit Of" Corpus Christi.

Many people lined either side under iconic Harbor Bridge for photos. Others walked to end of jetties to wave at the sailors.

So here we go. The USS City of Corpus Christi has been decommissioned now.

But a few photos of that awesome day the submarine visited it's namesake city, my hometown, PROUDLY.

PHOTOS: Photo #1. Facing North Beach with mess of folks taking photos on a cold day, especially on the three level viewing center on left of photo.

Photo #2. Different photo, more people, lots of sailors waving to cheering crowds. Photo from mainland facing north beach.

Photo #3 possibly my favorite with Corpus Christi downtown in background, most of Shoreline. Even Spohn hospital far left. Sharp eyed Texans will note Spoil Island directly above sub, used to be a great place for birds to nest, but is gone now.

Photo #4, the City of Corpus Christi submarine heads out after tour of my hometown Corpus Christi, subs in tow. Did you know Nazi Germany U-Boats were in gulf during world war 2?

Photo #5. USS City of Corpus Christi gave tours while docked in harbor.

Unfortunately I didn't get to tour it. But good crowds! Look in background left of photo, those are the grain elevators that would blow up later, killing a lot of people.

Photo #6. crowds line up in cold to tour the submarine. You could only get "X" amount of people on board for tour at a time. Love the Texas flag proudly flying.
