AMC AMX & Javelin
1968 thru 1974
Production Numbers

The 1968 AMX was not introduced until February 1968 & started appearing in dealer
showrooms March 1968. The 1968 Javelin appeared in Aug/Sept 1967. The MODEL numbers below
will be located on your
driver side metal door tag.
For instance a 71 AMX would be listed as:
7179-8; a 68 Javelin "base" model would be 6879-5.
All 1971-74 AMXs will be listed with a "8" in the sixth digit of the VIN.

*Important note: 100 Red, white & blue Trans Am Javelins were officially
produced in Kenosha, WI. These will have a door code of 7079-7. Factory
price was $3995.00, shipping weight was 3340 lbs. Most, if not all of the
1970 Trans Am Javelins will have the 00 paint code. This total of 100 is
included in final production number of 19714 units. 2501 Mark Donohue
Javelins were officially produced in Kenosha, WI. Not all have the
7079-7 door tag designating them as a SST.
Factory price is unknown, as you could get these de-optioned, or heavily
optioned, which of course, would also affect weight. You could get the Mark
Donohue Javelin in any production color including Big Bad Colors. The
total of 2501 officially made is reflected in the total production of 19714
above.
1970 AMX production see charts below.
**Note that EITHER Trans
Am Javelin or the Mark Donohue Javelin COULD
BE BUILT at any AMC Dealership according to in house memos directed by AMC's
Director of Advertising E. B. Brogan.
These are the
easiest two AMC Musclecars to clone/fake.
There is nothing
in the VIN, Door Tag or Build Sheet
on a 1970 Javelin to ID as a Donohue.
1971 Javelin & AMX production:
Body 7179-5 (base) 7105; factory price $2879.00; Ship weight 2887 lbs.
Body 7179-7 (SST) 17707; factory price $2999.00; Ship weight 2890 lbs.
Body 7179-8 (AMX) 2054; factory price $3432.00; Ship weight 3244 lbs.
1972 Javelin & AMX
production:
Body 7279-7 22964; factory price $3807.oo; Ship weight 3118 lbs.
Body 7279-8 (AMX) 3220; factory price $3109.00; Ship weight 3149 lbs.
*Note factory price for six cylinder was $2901.00 and ship weight was 2875
lbs. Total of 22964 includes 100 401V8 Alabama State Police Interceptors.
Pierre Cardin lent his name to AMC for a special production
Javelin (and AMX) model with striped interiors, headliners, and inserts, along with
exterior emblems on the vehicle. 4152 were built in 1972-74. The striped interior
is Chinese red, silver, plum, white on black background. Pierre Cardin interiors were only
available on the following exterior colors of: Trans Am Red, Snow White, Stardust Silver,
Diamond Blue and Wild Plum. See AMC
paint. Approximately 12 AMX's left Kenosha in Midnight Black in 1972! The
Pierre Cardin interior was a option thru model year 1974. Few exist.
The TRIM tag will
have a "W".
1973 Javelin & AMX
production:
Body 7379-7 25195; factory price $2983.00; Ship weight 3104 lbs.
Body 7379-8 (AMX) 5707; factory price $3191.00; Ship weight 3170 lbs.
*Note factory price for base model six cylinder Javs was $2889.00 and
shipping weight was 2868 lbs. A special Trans Am Javelin was introduced which featured a
large Trans Am Victory Edition decal on either fender just in front of the door.
The Trans
Am Victory Editions were usually heavier optioned than regular production
Javelins and part of this package consisted of the decal mentioned above with SCCA 1971-72
Trans Am Champs on it, and also 14" slot wheels with E70X14 RWL tires and space saver
spare. Note this decal is a readily available reproduction and has been added to many
72-74 Javelins, and AMXs thru the years.
There
is nothing in the VIN or door tag that will positively ID it as a Trans Am-Victory Edition
Javelin or AMX. It is a decal.
1974 Javelin & AMX

Body 7479-7 22556; factory price $3093.00; ship weight 3117 lbs.
Body 7479-8 (AMX) 4980; factory price $3299.00. Ship weight 3184 lbs.

AMC
asked for, and got, a production extension from Federal Government to take advantage of
changing emissions laws. 1974 production began August 1st, 1973 and was supposed to stop
July 30th, 1974, but ran to end of November 1974. In this 'gray area' mid July 74 thru end
of Nov 74 you will find all sort of oddities on vehicles built in that time frame, like
1975 paint colors, 304/3spd AMXs, steel hoods, and new 75 Pacer non 75 colors among a
few.

===============
*I have only seen two 70 AMXs with the rare heated rear glass
option. I do not know how many of the 28,210 1970 Javelins had this option which was
not available in 1968 or 1969.
Interior codes:
On your driver's side door the metal
door tag will have this info. In most
cases it is three numbers and a letter, but not always. For instance a 79
AMX may read:
TRIM 916K. The FIRST number of this code is the YEAR, such as the code here:
916K would be 9=1979. For 1968 thru 1974, this code would be 8 for 68, 9 for
69, 0 for 70, 1 for 1971 and so on. Second number is usually the model, such
as 30 would be for a 68-70 AMX, and 70 would be for 68-74 Javelin. The third
number is the interior color, and was used for many years:
1=black; 2=grey/platinum; 3=blue; 4=green; 5=red; 6=beige/tan/saddle, and in
some cases rose, burgundy, gold and cordovan; 7=aqua, avocado green, and
deep maroon; 8=black, white, parchment and turquoise; 9=yellow.
The 4th and usually final digit is the seat or interior type material.
A=standard base; B=standard base vinyl; C=fabric; D=bucket seats w/fabric;
E=cloth w/corduroy; F=bucket standard vinyl; G=wide buckets with fabric;
H=wide buckets with vinyl; J=standard base; K=bucket w/fabric; L=leather;
V=velour; W=optional custom trim. Some interiors also sported a double zero
code for Special Order=00.
1968 AMX: 831=black; 832=tan; 835=red. Only 1
