AMX Weekly Production Figures
Courtesy Linn Barton, Staunton, Virginia

Production for the 1968 model American Motors began August 1st, 1967. While the two seater AMX was not "formally" introduced until February 28th, 1968 midway thru production, many were indeed made in 1967. Some prototypes for the AMX go back as far as 1964. I have some prototype AMX pix for sale if you click on PRESS PHOTOS. This is a week by week production breakdown on the classic AMX two seater. The new 1968 AMC models appeared in Dealer Showrooms September 15th-18th, 1967. The new AMX appeared in Dealer Showrooms in March 1968. More on AM Dealerships! The first 550 AMXs did not have a AMX Dash Serial Number. The official Dash Serials used were 00001 to 06175.

End Of Production

*In 1970, AMC was in financial trouble, suffering a 2nd 1/4 loss of $10 million or 41 cents per share. This, along with the UAW strike affected first 1/4, where they incurred a loss of $15.6 million, resulted in a net loss in the first 1/2 of the fiscal year of a whopping $25 million.  The losses stated above had no benefit of tax credit. The strike mentioned above, closed the plants for five weeks in the fall, and cost AMC a whopping $23 million loss and 36,000 vehicles plus interruption of momentum in the market at a really critical time. AMC also bought Jeep from Willys in 1970 for $40 million.
